Peridots and Sardonyx: It must be August!

If you were born in August, you are lucky! There are two birthstones from which to choose: Peridot and Sardonyx.

Peridot

Peridot is said to host magical powers and healing properties. It can protect against nightmares, bring the wearer physical power, gives influence over others, and provides a year of good fortune. Since peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the earth, it can be brought to the surface by volcanic activity, and in Hawaii, Legends have it that peridots are the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Very strong stuff indeed.

Peridot also is mined in Arizona , China, Myanmar, and Pakistan. There are a variety of colors to choose from: yellow-green to brown, with the brighter greens being most popular. It is the only gemstone that can be found with a lime green to olive color.

Sardonyx

You may not have heard of Sardonyx before, but it is a type of onyx and has beautiful layers of reddish-brown and white stripes. The ancient Romans and Greeks carried talismans of sardonyx into battle engraved with images of their favorite heroes. They believed that this would make them victorious in battle.

Sardonyx is also used to create cameos (carved raised images) and intaglios (the opposite of cameos). When you see a cameo that has red and white, it is Sardonyx. Perhaps carrying a Sardonyx cameo will provide victory in love?

Sardonyx is found just about anywhere, but is commonly mined in India, and also is mined in Czechoslovakia, Brazil, Uruguay, Germany, and in the United States.
